How To Calculate Dimensional Weight & Reduce Shipping Costs
Learn how to calculate dimensional weight (DIM weight) to optimize shipping costs and avoid unexpected fees.
This guide explains the DIM weight formula, why carriers use it, and how to reduce costs by adjusting package dimensions. Whether you're shipping with UPS, FedEx, or USPS, understanding dimensional weight helps you make informed decisions and save on freight expenses.
Why Carriers Use DIM weight, & How FFC Can Help You Save Money:
Small parcel carriers such as FedEx and UPS determine shipping costs based on either the actual weight or dimensional weight, which is calculated using package volume. The higher of the two values is used as the billable weight.
Most carriers apply a dimensional weight factor of 165, which works for smaller, denser packages. However, in the mid-2000s, carriers commonly used a DIM factor of 195 before lowering it over time—effectively increasing rates for bulkier shipments.
At Florence Filter, we have a Dimensional Waiver with FedEx, applying a DIM factor of 235 to all shipments. This exclusive agreement allows us to ship larger packages at lower freight costs, ensuring better pricing for our customers.
By understanding DIM weight and leveraging strategic shipping contracts, businesses can significantly reduce freight expenses and improve cost efficiency.

How to Calculate Dimensional Weight: Step-by-Step Guide
Understanding how to calculate dimensional weight (DIM weight) is essential for managing shipping costs. Use the following formula to determine whether your shipment will be charged based on actual weight or DIM weight.
Dimensional Weight Formula:
Dimensional Weight (lbs) = (Height × Width × Depth) ÷ DIM Factor
Billing Rule:
- If actual weight > DIM weight → Use actual weight
- If actual weight < DIM weight → Use DIM weight
Dimensional Weight Calculation Example:
Product: PLF177 24x24x2 Pleat B (12 per case)
Box Dimensions: 24" × 24" × 23.5"
Volume: 13,536 cubic inches
24 x 24 x 23.5 = 13,536 square inches
DIM Factor | Calculated DIM Weight (DIM FACTOR ÷ 13,536) |
---|---|
165 | 82.1 lbs |
195 | 69.5 lbs |
235 | 57.6 lbs |
Actual Weight: 15 lbs
Without dimensional weight, this package would be billed at 15 lbs. However, based on carrier DIM factors, the shipping weight could range from 57.6 lbs to 82.1 lbs—significantly increasing costs.
By using Florence Filter’s exclusive Dimensional Waiver with FedEx, which applies a DIM factor of 235, we ensure lower freight charges for our customers by reducing the DIM weight applied to shipments.
Optimize your shipping strategy by calculating DIM weight correctly and taking advantage of cost-saving opportunities!
